Those damned Lakers

30 05 2008

They're at it again

They’re At It Again

But this one will be sweeter.

….for Pau Gasol, who proved he could come up big in big games. Who hadn’t gotten out of the first round. Who was able to co-exist with Kobe and Lamar without any distractions. Who fit the Triangle Offense perfectly. Who played just enough defense to get the job done. Who finally feels at home on a successful basketball team.

….for Coby Karl, who overcame cancer to be a part of the Lakers’ roster. Who has now gotten further in the playoffs than his father. Who is congratulated by every coach immediately after games. Who is possibly the best known player always in suits.

….for Ira Newble, who is the quitessential role player. Whose over-achieving in Cleveland let to his contract with the Lakers. Who played only a minute in the playoffs. But who dropped 15 the last time the Lakers played Boston. Who has a chance (with some help in the East) to play for a title in his hometown of Detroit, MI.

….for Trevor Ariza, who rushed back from injury to contribute. Who Orlando and New York gave up on way too early. Who is as big a part of this team’s future as anyone. Whose athleticism, age (22), and on-the-ball defensive skills could make him the next Bruce Bowen.

…for Luke Walton, who split starts at the “3″ spot this year with Vladimir Radmanovic despite being considerably better. But who passes as well as anyone his size in the league. Who plays well in whatever role Phil Jackson gives him without complaints. Who has established a jump shot so that defenses have to account for him. Who has quietly become one of the team’s best defenders.

….For Phil Jackson, who needed this on his resume. Who proved he could build a championship (-level?) team from the ground up. Who made sure he doesn’t have to watch his rivals (Pat Riley and Greg Popovich) win any titles this year. Who is now truly in the argument with Red Auerbach (best coach ever?). Who is running out of fingers for all his rings. Who i will never question again.

….For DJ Mbega, who is on his third team in 12 months. Who could’ve really helped the Warriors. Who finally looks like he’s found a team he feels comfortable on. Who Kobe made sure he includes in all celebrations. Who is the only Laker player, other than Kobe and Fish, who’s been to the finals before.

….For Andrew Bynum, who now has to be focused in his return. Who needs to bring his A-game just to start for this team next year. Whose injury was what caused the season-changing Pau Gasol trade. Who has finally seemed to tap into his vast potential. Who now considers Kobe Bryant as a “friend.” Who saw all his tireless work with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar seem to go to waste on one fall. Who is the reason the team thought they could go for it all this year. Who is the future of this team.

….For Ronny Turiaf, who is one of the best first-big-men-off-the-bench in the league. Whose contributions to this team cannot be measured in statistics of any kind. Who despite having overcome Open Heart Surgery, might just have the biggest heart in the league. Who has his picture in the dictionary next to the word “energy.”

….For Chris Mihm, who had been the team’s starting center the past two seasons, but didn’t make the playoff roster this year. Who averages more fouls per game in his career than blocks, steals, and assists combined. Who never really recovered after his ankle surgery.

….For Vladimir Radmanovic, who has had such an up-and-down relationship with Phil Jackson, they made Kobe and Shaq looked High School sweethearts. Who should never go snowboarding again. Who is the highest paid space cadet on the planet. Whose ability to shoot the basketball will keep him in the league for a long time.

….For Jordan Farmar, who lived in Arron Afflalo’s shadow at UCLA. Who shot 46% despite critics’ insistence that he doesn’t have a jumpshot. Who had absolutely no confidence at the end of the Utah series. Who is on a fairy tale ride with his hometown team. Who is the reason they traded Crittenton. Who is the team’s future at point guard.

….For Sasha Vujacic, who was the joke of the playoffs a couple years ago. Who has become Pau’s best friend. Who has turned into the perfect NBA sixth man. Who shut down Ginobili. Who annoyingly hits every clutch 3 possible.

….For Lamar Odom, who dominated Boozer in Utah. Who has had his best season with the Lakers, as the third gun. Who has somehow morphed into Shawn Marion without the attitude problem. Who has stood in the shadows of Elton Brand, Dwayne Wade, and Kobe Bryant for his whole career. Whose success is what drives the Lakers. Who is the ultimate matchup problem – too big for 3s, too quick for 4s. Who, as a native New Yorker, would like nothing more than to stick it to Boston. And who discovered Ali Vegas!

….For Derek Fisher, who came back to the Lakers to do something special. Who got boo’d in Utah despite helping them overachieve. Whose daughter’s health issues are always a concern. Who is, by all accounts, one of the best human beings that the NBA has. Who, like Kobe, has 3 rings and wants more. Who was that final link for this team emotionally – the guy that Kobe listens to, that can keep Kobe in check when things aren’t going too good.

….For Mitch Kupchak, who took a lot of heat over the past 3 years. Who Kobe, though rightfully so, criticized so harshly last summer. Who got the steal of the century with the Gasol trade. Who gave Bynum time to grow up. Who gave Kobe time to grow up.

….And of course, for Kobe Bryant. Who no longer has to be compared to Lebron and D-Wade. But is now only compared to his idol, Michael Jordan. Who is quickly becoming the second best SG of all time. Who is now not only the most talented player in the league by far, but the best player and teammate in the league. Who showed patience with the team during the season. Who turned in a playoffs performance for the ages. Who did everything right once the season actually started. Who is, by far, the best player in the NBA today.

But Like Phil said, winning the Conference Championship means nothing if you don’t win the big prize.

Best Coaches in the League (Part 4 & Final)

29 05 2008

5. Rick Carlisle, DAL
(IND, 2004-2007; 181-147, .552 reg. season; 18-17, .514 in playoffs)
2004 61-21, .744 1st in Central, beat BOS in 1st, beat MIA in 2nd, lost to DET in CF
2005 44-38, .537 3rd in Central, beat BOS in 1st, lost to DET in 2nd
2006 41-41, .500 4th in Central, lost to NJN in 1st
2007 35-47, .427 4th in Central (fired)

To me, he’s still one of the best minds in the game and will be a very good fit in Dallas.  The downfall of Indiana was not his fault at all.  That was some slightly crazy players acting completely crazy.  He was setting up a dynasty in Indy, it’s a shame how everything turned out.  But he will resurrect Dallas.  He will get them to play D, and he’s even trying to trade for his old pal Ron Artest.

4. Mike D’Antoni, NYK
(PHX, 2003-2008; 253-136, .650 reg. season; 26-25, .510 in playoffs)
2004 29-53, .354 6th in Midwest
2005 62-20, .756 1st in Pacific beat MEM in 1st, DAL in 2nd, lost to SAS in CF
2006 54-28, .659 1st in Pacific beat LAL in 1st, LAC in 2nd, lost to DAL in CF
2007 61-21, .744 1st in Pacific beat LAL in 1st, lost to SAS in 2nd
2008 55-27, .671 2nd in Pacific lost to SAS in 1st

New York will be a challenge for D’Antoni.  He doesn’t have the personel to run his offense there.  But he is one of the best Offensive coaches in the league, and his run & gun style will be a hit in New York, even if they don’t win a lot of games right away.  But as long as they stay with him, they will.

3. Larry Brown, CHA
(DET, 2003-05; NYK, 2005-2006; 131-115, .533 in reg. season; 31-17, .646 in playoffs)
2004 54-28, .659 2nd in Central beat MIL in 1st, NJN in 2nd, IND in CF, LAL in Finals; WC!
2005 54-28, .659 1st in Central beat PHI in 1st, IND in 2nd, MIA in CF, lost to SAS in Finals (re-signed)
2006 23-59, .280 5th in Atlantic

The best teacher in the game is still one of the four guys in this timespan with a ring.  He has a ring and a finals appearance on his resume from our given time period.  So we’ll excuse him for the shipwreck in New York, as it hasn’t exactly gotten better since he left.  But he’s got a lot of work to do with Charlotte.  But with Okafor, Wallace, and J-Rich, it seems he has a bunch of guys who can play “the right way.”

2. Phil Jackson, LAL
(LAL, 2003-04; LAL, 2005-Pres; 200-128, .610 reg. season; 28-20, .583 in playoffs)
2004 56-26, .683 1st in Pacific beat HOU in 1st, SAS in 2nd, MIN in CF lost to DET in F
2006 45-37, .549 3rd in Pacific lost to PHX in 1st
2007 42-40, .519 2nd in Pacific lost to PHX in 1st
2008 57-25, .695 1st in Pacific beat DEN in 1st, UTA in 2nd, up 3-1 on SAS in CF

Hard to believe, but of his 9 rings, none of them came in our time-span.  In fact, it’s been seven years since his last ring.  But he still gets the most out of the talent he has.  And he’s second only to a man who won 2 of the 4 rings in our time period.  So that’s not exactly low-balling him….

The Best Coach In The League is….

1. Greg Popovich, SAS
(SAS, 2003-Pres.; 293-117, .715; 72-28, .720)
2004 57-25, .695 2nd in Midwest beat MEM in 1st, lost to LAL in 2nd
2005 59-23, .720 1st in Southwest beat DEN in 1st, SEA in 2nd, PHX in CF, DET in F; WC!
2006 63-19, .768 1st in Southwest beat SAC in 1st, lost to DAL in 2nd
2007 58-24, .707 2nd in Southwest beat DEN in 1st, PHX in 2nd, UTA in CF, CLE in F; WC!
2008 56-26, .683 2nd in Southwest beat PHX in 1st, NOH in 2nd, losing 1-3 to LAL in F

‘Nuff Said!

3.) “Kush” (prod. Maestro)
4.) “Love Me Or Hate Me” (prod. D. Kirkwood)
5.) “Talkin About It” (prod. Infamous)

…..

(I’d say Weezy’s goin for the gusto. 22 Tracks? 3 Kanye Joints? I’d guess this is going to be the biggest album of the summer, by far. But not necessarily the best. Nothing I’ve heard has been too impressive so far)

June 10 – Plies-Definition of Real(Slip-N-Slide/Atlantic)

Confirmed Tracklist:
1.) “I’m Da Man”
2.) “Ol’ Lady”
3.) “Bushes”
4.) “Worth Goin FED Fo”
5.) “Dat Bitch”
6.) “Somebody (Loves You)”
7.) “Feel Like Fuckin”
8.) “Watch Dis”
9.) “Who Hotter Than Me”
10.) “1Day”
11.) “Bust It Baby Pt. 2″
12.) “Shit Bag”
13.) “Please Excuse My Hands”
14.) “Rich Folk”
15.) “#1 Fan”
Production: DVS, JR Rotem, Mario Winans, Scott Storch, Polow Da Don, Akon, The Runners, T-Pain, Khao, DJ Frak E, Ollie G

(Plies is coming back too quick. That Ne-Yo song is kinda hot though, sounds like a New Edition track. Though I have a feeling that’s not exactly what he wants if he’s in it for the long-run. I liked his first album, but i can’t say i’m too excited about this new joint.)

June 17 – Ice Cube-Raw Footage(Lench Mob)
feat. “Gansta Rap Made Me Do It”

(Ice Cube playing the role of the underdog? Who woulda thunk it? But the release date is creeping closer and still there is not much info on this project. We’ll have to see if anything new drops – keep an eye on this one.)

June 24 – Three 6 Mafia-Last 2 Walk(Hypnotize Minds/Columbia/Sony)

Tentative Tracklist:
1. “Intro”
2. “I Told ‘Em”
3. “Trap Boom” (feat. Project Pat)

7. “That’s Right” (feat. Akon)
8. “Corner Man”
9. “Weed Blow Pills”
10. “DXS Talk”
11. “Hood Star” (feat. Lyfe Jennings)
12. “Get Ya Rob” (feat. Project Pat)
13. “On Some Chrome” (feat. UGK)
14. “Rollin” (feat. Lil Wyte)
15. “Click Bang”
16. “My Own Way” (feat. Good Charlotte)
17. “Dirty Bitch”
18. “First 48″ (feat. Eightball/Al Kapone/MJG/Project Pat/Spanish Fly)
19. “Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body) Intro
20. “Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)” (feat. Project Pat/Superpower/Young D)
21. “Outro”

(Ok, you know the deal by now. You’re gonna get a bunch of nonsense from them lyrically, and a bunch of silliness from their hooks. You either like it or you don’t. I do appreciate that they don’t strand too far out of their comfort zone. This is one of the few albums that doesn’t have production from Cool & Dre and Polow Da Don and guest spots from Akon and Rick Ross. But whaddup with “Dope Boy Fresh”?! That’s the joint! And I’m not sure how this un-Halloween-sampling version of “Lolli Lolli”’s gonna turn out.)

June 2008 – DJ Khaled-We Global Now(Terror Squad/Koch)
feat. “Out Here Grindin” (feat. Akon, Rick Ross, Plies, Lil Boosie, Trick Daddy, Ace Hood, & Lil Wayne) (prod. The Runners)
Other Production: DJ Khaled, Cool & Dre, Lil Jon, Kanye West, Diddy, The Hitmen, Just Blaze, Polow Da Don, Jermaine Dupri, Scott Storch, Timbaland)

(It’s really easy to hate this guy, but he just keeps his movement going. And he does have a thing for hot posse cuts. Anyone who didn’t like “We Takin Over” should be terminated immediately!)

July 1 – Busta Rhymes-Blessed (Aftermath/Interscope)

confirmed tracks:
1.) “Don’t Touch Me Now” (Throw Da Water On Em)”/Remix? (prod. Sean C & LV) (*First Single*)
2.) “We Made It” (feat. Linkin Park) (prod. Cool & Dre) (*Second Single*)
3.) “Don’t Believe Them” (feat. T.I. & Akon) (prod. Cool & Dre)
4.) “Throw It Up” (feat. Lil Wayne & Ludacris) (prod. Cool & Dre)
5.) “Kill Dem” (prod. Neptunes)
6.) “Blown” (feat. T-Pain) (prod. Cool & Dre)
7.) “Decisions” (feat. Jamie Foxx, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, & Common)(prod. Dr. Dre)
8.) “Right Now” (prod. Dr. Dre & Focus)
9.) “Let me Show You” (prod. Busta Rhymes & DJ Skratch)
10.) “I’m Gonna Get Mine” (prod. DJ Skratch)
11.) “If” (feat. Nicole Scherzinger) (prod. Rick Rock)
12.) “G Stroll” (feat. Pharrell) (prod. Neptunes)
13.) “Kill Dem” (prod. Neptunes)
14.) “Hits 4 Days”(feat. J.Holiday) (prod. Dready Beats)
15.) “If You Don’t Know, Now You Know” (feat. Big Tigger) (prod. Focus)

(Something tells me this or G Unit is gettin moved. This is two releases from, essentially, the same camp on the same day. Busta’s is shaping up to be a banger though. Lots of Cool & Dre beats is a good thing. And did i mention that both of the singles are pure fire?)

July 1- G Unit-Terminate On Site (G Unit/Interscope)

Confirmed Tracks:
1.) “The Party Ain’t Over”
2.) “I Like the Way She Do It” (prod. Stereo)
3.) “I Get Down” (prod. Swizz Beats)
4.) “Rider Pt.2″ (prod. Rick Rock)
5.) “Untitled” (50 Cent & Eminem)
6.) “Straight Outta Southside”
7.) “Death Around The Corner”
8.) “No Days Off”
9.) “The Piano Man” (prod. The Bizzness)
10.) “Kitty Kat” (prod. Polow Da Don)

(I might check out the Polow track. But i am severely unimpressed. The overly-dramatic crew keeps kicking out their best rappers. Now they’re down to three and they have no good rappers left to kick out.)

July 1 – Nas-Untitled (The Jones Experience/Def Jam)
confirmed tracks:
1.) “My Legacy” (prod. Polow Da Don)
2.) “Sly Fox” (prod. Stic.man of dead prez)
3.) “The Fear (of the Black Man’s Dick)”
4.) “This Is Not America” (prod. Stargate)
5.) “Be A Nigger Too” (prod. Salaam Remi) (*Street Single*)
6.) “Project Roach” (prod. No ID)
7.) “Y’all My Niggers”
8.) “N.I.G.G.E.R. (prod. DJ Toomp)
9.) “America’s Top Brothel” (prod. stic.man of Dead Prez)
Other Production: Alchemist, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Khaled, DJ Khalil, Diddy & The Hitmen, Jay Electronica, Jake One, & MF Doom
Features: Jay Electronica, dead prez, Rick Ross, & The Lox

(Ahh, still no single. Unless that “Be A Nigger Too” counts. Where’s the Khaled and Polow tracks that are supposed to be mega-smashes? But i do like that he grabbed Jay Electronica and Stic.man for some beats. This could be the album of the summer (critically) just yet!)

July 8 – Game-L.A.X. (Geffen/Interscope)
confirmed tracks:
1.) “Game’s Pain” (feat. Keyshia Cole) (prod. Knobody) (*First Single*)
2.) “Gold Old Days” (prod. FOC)
3.) “Make The World Go ‘Round” (prod. Cool & Dre)
4.) “People” (feat. Mary J. Blige) (prod. Cool & Dre)
5.) “Red Magic” (feat. Lil Wayne) (prod. Cool & Dre)
6.) “Street Ryders” (feat. Akon & Nas) (prod. Cool & Dre)
Other Production: Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, Just Blaze, DJ Khalil, JR Rotem, Polow Da Don, DJ Toomp, Timbaland, Jelly Roll, Tre Beats, Ervin “E.P.” Pope, Kanye West, Swizz Beats, Hi Tek, Nottz
Other features: Busta Rhymes, Chris Brown, Common, Ice Cube, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Marsha Ambrosius, Ne-Yo, Raekwon, Fabolous, & Robin Thicke

(Busta Rhymes seems to have stolen his album formulas. Nevertheless, thats a lot of Cool & Dre beats. And that “Game’s Pain” is THE jam. I’m semi-hyped for this album. But I don’t know if i want Chris Brown or Robin Thicke anywhere near this CD. But he might come the closest to Wayne for album of the summer (popularity). And he’s got an outside chance at album of the summer (critically).)

July 8 – Killer Mike-I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind 2 (Grind Time/SMC)
1.) “City Lights”
2.) “Alphabet Boys”
3.) “God In The Building”
4.) “2 Sides” (feat. Shawty Lo)

(A second major challenger for album of the summer critically. “2 Sides” is the jam! This is the major underdog for the summer, but Killer Mike got flows and knowledge to kick.)

July 8 – LL CooL J-Exit 13 (G Unit/Def Jam)
confirmed tracks:
1.) “Whatcha Hood Like” (feat. Lil Scrappy)(prod. Freebase)
2.) “Queens” (feat. 50 Cent, Prodigy, Kool G Rap & Tony Yayo) (prod. Illmind)
3.) “New York Gangstas” (prod. The Pusher)
4.) “Shake The Keys”
5.) “Rock The Pole”
6.) “Champion”
7.) “Bump This” (feat. 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, & Young Hot Rod)
8.) “Scratch My Head”
9.) “The 5 Boroughs Is Back” (prod. Suits) (feat. Jim Jones, Method Man, KRS-One, & Lil Kim)
10.) “I Cry” (feat. Lil Mo) (*First Single*)

(I mean seriously, who’s checkin for this dude? “I Cry” really sounds like a sped up version of that Ja Rule song of the same title. And what a weird group of rappers to bring together for “The 5 Boroughs”? I’ll give it a shot, but I’m not expecting much.)

July 15 – David Banner-The Greatest Story Ever Told (Universal)
Confirmed Tracks:
1.) “9 mm”(feat. Akon, Lil Wayne & Snoop Dogg) (prod. Akon)
2.) “Get Like Me” (feat. Young Joc & Chris Brown) (prod. David Banner) (*First Single*)
3.) “Fuck Them Hoes” (prod. Cool & Dre)
4.) “K.O.” (prod. David Banner)
5.) “Suicide Doors” (feat. UGK & Kandi Burruss)
6.) “Ball With Me” (feat. Chamillionaire) (prod. Nitti)
7.) “Get Money” (feat. DG Yola)
8.) “A Girl” (prod. Cool & Dre)
9.) “So Special”
10.) “Toes Down” (feat. Chopper City Boyz)
11.) “Check That Nigga” (feat. Trick Daddy & Rick Ross)
12.) “Stereo”
13.) “Us & The Gunz”
14.) “Hello” (feat. Young Jeezy)
15.) “Candyman”
16.) “Saints Row”
17.) “Under Your Spell” (feat. Chris Brown)
18.) “Long Days” (prod. Nitti)
19.) “Whatever You Want” (feat. Carl Thomas)
20.) “Lord Knows” (feat. Young Sensations)

(Been waiting on this for a minute. “Suicide Doors” is my ish. And 2 Chris Brown songs is a good look for Banner. That’s two singles in the bank. But i don’t think this is gonna keep its’ release date. David Banner ain’t gonna out-sell Nelly, and they ain’t gonna release both these albums the same day.)

July 15 – Nelly-Brass Knuckles (Universal)
Confirmed Tracks:
1.) “Bay” (prod. Droop-E)
2.) “Body On Me” (feat. Akon & Ashanti) (prod. Akon)
3.) “Chill” (feat. St. Lunatics)
4.) “Hold Up” (feat. T.I. & LL Cool J) (prod. Free Agents)
5.) “Lie”
6.) “Let It Go” (feat. Pharrell) (prod. Neptunes)
7.) “Long Night” (feat. Usher) (prod. JLack)
8.) “1 And Only”
9.) “Party People” (feat. Fergie) (prod. Polow Da Don)
10.) “Self Esteem” (prod. Chuck D)
11.) “Stepped On My J’s” (feat. Ciara & Jermaine Dupri) (prod. Jermaine Dupri)
12.) “Thinkin Bout You” (feat. Babyface) (prod. Babyface)
13.) “Untitled” (feat. Katt Williams)
14.) “Warrior”
Other Production: Bryan Michael Cox, Jay E, Neff-U, Steve Morales

(Ehh…yeah it’s nelly. But i can’t front. “The Bay” is hot!)

July 29 – Young Jeezy-The Recession (CTE/Def Jam)
first single = “Put On” (prod. Drumma Boy) (feat. Kanye West)
also: “Real Gangstas” (feat. Akon)(prod. JR Rotem)

(Here’s a change. An A-List artist keeping a much-anticipated album top-secret. Funny thing is, he’s scheduled for 2 weeks before T.I., and we already have T.I.’s tracklist. “Put On” = sleeper pick for song of the summer.)

July 2008 – Big Boi-Sir Luscious Left Foot (OutKast Records/LaFace)
Confirmed Tracks:
1.) “Royal Flush” (feat. Raekwon & Andre 3000)
2.) “The World Is Too Big” (feat. Mary J. Blige)
3.) “Sir Luscious Left Foot Saves The Day”
Other Production: Big Boi, Organized Noize, Andre 3000, Mr. DJ, Royal Flush, Scott Storch

(Here’s the Big Boi album. “Royal Flush” is the jam. But what else do he got up his sleeve? I’m sure i’ll cop this regardless. But I’m pretty curious about this album.)

Aug. 12 – T.I.-Paper Trail (Grand Hustle/Atlantic)
Confirmed Tracks:
1.) “What’s Up, What’s Happening” (feat. Lil Wayne) (prod. Danja)
2.) “No Matter What” (prod. Danja)
3.) “Let My Beat Pound” (prod. JR Rotem)
4.) “Collect Call”
5.) “You Ain’t Missing Nothing”
6.) “Sitting On Top Of The World” (feat. B.O.B. & Kanye West) (prod. Kanye West)
7.) “I’m Illin”
8.) “Turn My Beat Down”
9.) “My Life, Your Entertainment)
Other Producers: Swizz Beats, The Runners, Just Blaze, Mannie Fresh, Neptunes, David Banner, Timbaland, DJ Toomp, Lil C, Keith Mack, Jay Rock, Tha Bizness

(T.I. is of course, Wayne’s main competition sales-wise. Throw Jeezy and Game in the mix too. But T.I. sold just under two mil on a dud last year. The Wayne song is supposedly going to be the first single. But I’m curious to hear the Kanye/B.O.B. song too. We’ll see what happens. This could very well end up the best album of the summer and the best selling album of the summer.)

This Ain’t Livin…

29 05 2008

“takes a life to make a life/livin in a world of crime tonight/can’t find a better way to break through/this ain’t livin’, i gotta do what i gotta do” – “This Ain’t Livin” (c) 2001 2Pac

You Might not want to believe this, but OJ Mayo is the norm, not the exception

I was going to write something silly today, like a tribute to athlete-rappers or something. But instead, Stephen A. Smith had a riveting article on ESPN.com about OJ Mayo and the star system in college basketball. I have to say, it’s a system that’s as set in its’ ways as the United States government, and like Obama says, “It’s Time For A Change.” Many people would like to believe that this is the way that pro ball players make it to the pros:

Scenario 1:

Erick Smith played with great players in High School. He saw them get all the attention and the entourages. He someday dreamed he would be good enough to be noticed. While some of his teammates were heavily recruited, he went to LSU as a walk-on. He was the type of pure point guard that doesn’t need the attention. He was happy to pass it off to his teammates, just as he did on the court. In fact, he loved the game so much, he would play for free. The team red-shirts him as a freshman, so he can soak up as much of their system as possible. He isn’t making any money, but he gets a full scholarship starting the following season. Coach Trent Johnson emphasizes to him that while the school is remembered for big men like Shaq and Tyrus Thomas, the school has also sent guards like Chris Jackson, Randy Livingston, and Ronald Dupree to the pros. And if Smith worked really hard, he could make it too. Smith likes the idea because it eliminates agents at such a young age. Smith doesn’t make what some of the bigger names from his High School Teammates make, but he’s happy to get by with his full-scholarship. Without any outside influences, Erick can focus on school and hoops. Eventually becoming one of the school’s most recognized players by his Senior year. He doesn’t have the upside that some of the top players in his draft have, but he’s a “winner.” On draft night, Coach Johnson cries when Smith becomes the 13th player overall, chosen by the Milwuakee Bucks. Coach Skiles loves college-hardened winners. The media had fallen in love with such a smart, well-rounded player. He’s finally ready for the NBA lifestyle, and becomes successful at his own rate.

…..

But it’s not. Anyone who believes in these theories is living in another world, and need to read the title of this blog. The more likely scenario is this:

Scenario 2:

A young baller comes out of Coney Island, NYC, lets call him Jim Johnson. Everyone that’s seen him swears that he’s a better scorer than Sebastian Telfair or Stephon Marbury, that he can handle the rock and dish better than Mark Jackson or Kenny Anderson. He even goes to Lincoln High, the school Marbury went to. The kid is finishing his senior year and high school and is deciding what school he wants to attend for a year, before he makes the break for the pros. He’s a big point at 6-4, and scouts say he has both the handles and the court vision to play the point in the pros.

Tonight is the finals game for the City Championship against Archbishop. Johnson drops 36 points and 13 dimes and completely dominates the 86-78 victory. Before he’s done wiping the sweat off his face in the locker room, he is approached by a man named Ryan Smith. Ryan’s a local kid from his Jim’s neighborhood that did the “right thing” and went to NYU on a full academic scholarship. With all the killings and gang activity in the neighborhood, Jim’s glad to meet someone who “made it out.” After some catching up, Ryan asks Jim how his family is doing and offers some help. Jim has never met his father and his mom works at a factory barely scraping by at minimum wage. Ryan claims he can set up a charity where he can donate money and Jim can take it out. He says he’s just tryin to help a local kid capitalize on his talents by giving Mom some much-needed extra income. Jim and his family are appreciative, and the fund is all set up by the time Jim goes off to play for his AAU team.

Jim is recruited by many colleges, most of whom send coaches who know Ryan fairly well. Ryan helps Jim decide to stay local and attend Syracuse, with its’ rich basketball tradition. Jim knows very well; Carmelo Anthony went there, Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglass. Jim can rattle off big name NBA players who went to Syracuse like they were his ‘boys from his neighborhood. The final deciding factor was getting to meet ‘Melo. He got to talk to him about his one-year stay at Syracuse and how Coach Boeheim helped develop him into an NBA star.

A year passes, and Jim is leading Syracuse into the NCAA Tournament. His numbers for his freshman year weren’t quite as good as he expected, but he was a first team All-Big East player. While he wasn’t able to dominate in college like he did in High School, he definitely was the best player on his team. But as a sixth seed, Syracuse is upset in the first round of the tournament by a determined LSU squad. Jim is torn about whether to jump to the pros. He’s actually enjoyed college and doesn’t know if he’s quite ready for the NBA-lifestyle. Being the big man on campus was stressful enough. Everyone wanted to talk to him. Jim’s spent his whole life as an introverted guy who never talked to anyone. In fact, all he really knew was basketball. He was smart enough, and worked hard enough to pass the classes they’d set up for him at the ‘Cuse, but he didn’t know how much longer he could keep it up. Plus basketball was his life, not Communication. But his mom wanted him to stay in school, she thought he had some life-lessons to learn, and he wasn’t going to do well jumping straight into the NBA. Coach Boeheim thinks it’s a smart business move to make the jump, because he doesn’t think his stock can get much higher. But he also said the smart move for him as a person would be to stay in school. Boeheim also senses Johnson’s immaturity and how generally shy he is, and wonders how he will deal with the pressures of being an NBA superstar.

But Ryan’s been the backbone for Jim since that day after the NYC City Final. He’s helped Mom stay afloat financially, and helped Jim make the decision to go to Syracuse in the first place. And Ryan’s boss wants Jim to make the jump. He’s been pressuring Ryan to keep letting Jim know that he needs to get paid.

So the loyalty to Ryan is the final factor and Jim enters the draft, signing with Ryan’s agency to represent him. He is drafted third overall by the Sacramento Kings.

After making the jump, Jim is ambushed by the press. He’s never had to deal with this many people wanting a piece of him. He runs into the stereotypical NBA groupies and the demands of representing the team in a town where the Kings are all they’ve got. Jim finds himself completely overwhelmed. He already regrets his decision and begins to resent Ryan for talking him into it. The friendship is broken and Jim finds himself not knowing who to trust. His previous solace when things were going crazy, the basketball court, is now more work than pleasure. He still has press following him on the court, off the court, asking about his personal life, and wanting to dig up dirt on him to make their stories. Finding himself out of Jim’s financial loop, Ryan goes public with the charity fund he’d set up and how much money Jim and his family took. Jim finds himself wishing he’d never met Ryan, never taken his gifts, and never gone pro early. But it’s easier to say that now that he’s a millionaire. The press starts to paint this picture of Jim as just another greedy NBA millionaire. So now Jim can’t turn on ESPN without seeing himself being bashed. Every one of their NBA analysts say he wasn’t ready to turn pro, and say he was being greedy. And to top it off, he watches highlights of his Syracuse team, and they’re struggling. Coach Boeheim sits at a post-game press conference and goes off on a reporter when they keep asking if the team missed Jim. And one of the groupies who he met after the draft now turns up saying she’s pregnant, and its’ his kid. Finally, his father, whom he’s never met, calls him asking to help him out. Apparently he’s gotten a gambling debt, and doesn’t have the means to pay it.

These are the types of stories that made Stephon Marbury go crazy.

….

The point:

Blue Chips was about as real as a movie could depict into this process. When it came out it was widely accepted as nearly the truth. But nearly 15 years later, people are still snubbing their noses at the Reggie Bush’s and OJ Mayo’s. Obviously, players don’t take money from schools, they take them from agents. This is why the system is completely screwed.

Who cared about Kansas State before Beasley got there?

Before OJ Mayo arrived at USC, no one cared about basketball. The school thinks of basketball as a way to kill time before Pete Carrill opens camp. With Mayo there, the school made millions off of his buzz. Same thing with Michael Beasley in Kansas State. But these players are not professional, and thus are not paid. But shouldn’t they be, when these schools are obviously capitalizing off of these big names from High School? And if they were, would it make it more likely that they would stay in school until they were comfortable? Wouldn’t it cut down on the outside influence of agencies throwing money at them? Would they learn how to develop social skills (which is what college is really for anyway)? Who even knew what division Kansas State was in before this season?

So the agents take a big chance and channel the money to the kid. And every once in a while an OJ Mayo or a Chris Webber happens, and they get caught. But 99% of the time, that doesn’t happen. And the cycle continues. It leads to young kids having to have huge outside influences that aren’t necessarily positive. They grow up not trusting anyone. Their relationships with almost everyone they know are based upon what they can do with a basketball. But the system works 99% of the time, because only very few ever get caught.  And so the system continues.

East Coast Killa/West Coast Killa

21 05 2008

I don’t know if they realize it yet, but Crooked I and Saigon are very much connected. They have each been labeled “the Future” of their respective historic states. Crooked I follows a lineage of Ice Cube and 2Pac, while Saigon reminds people more of Nas and 50. They both dropped what was supposed to be the lead singles from their albums (Crooked I’s “New West Anthem” and Sai Giddy’s “Cmon Baby”) at the end of last year, and both leaked their latest singles today. Both have beefed with veterans of their respective cities. Sai’s had a very public feud with Prodigy of Mobb deep. Crooked’s lyrically taken on Ras Kass, has something brewing with Snoop & Kurupt, and on the low, has taken shots at Game. Both are backed by some heavy hitters. Crook’s got Akon on the new single, and every DJ out west hopped on his 52 “Hip Hop Weekly” freestyles. Sai-giddy’s got Just Blaze in his corner, Nas’ co-sign, and a Jay-Z appearance on the remix to “C’mon Baby.”

But both of their albums have been pushed back more times than Tyra Banks’ hairline (word to Hova!). There is a rumor that Saigon is finally going to leave Atlantic Records for his debut The Greatest Story Never Told, while Crooked has still not publicly announced a distributer for his debut, B.O.S.S. (Beginning of Something Serious). They both came originally under more prominant clicks. Sai-giddy was rumored to be a G-Unit affiliate before the group blew up, while Crook was supposed to be the future of Death Row long before he was annointed the future of the West Coast.

Their latest singles (Saigon’s “Believe It” and Crooked I’s “Dream Big” – which, i assume, is named to differentiate it from Game’s “Big Dreams”) are both hot. Crooked seems to have a bigger buzz, but one would think they both face the same problems of being “too lyrical” (“even paralyzed people gotta stand for somethin!”) in an age of dumbed down ringtone rap. But they’ve both come along quite a journey to where they are now, and hopefully they’ll continue straight to the top. It’d be nice to see MC’s with crazy skills winning again.

20 best Coaches (part 3) – I Put On For My City…..

21 05 2008

10. Avery Johnson
(DAL, 2004-2007; 264-194, .735 reg. season; 23-24, .489 in playoffs)
2005 16-2, .889 2nd in Southwest, beat HOU in 1st, lost to PHO in 2nd
2006 61-22, .732 2nd in Southwest, beat MEM in 1st, SAS in 2nd, PHO in WCF, lost to MIA in F
2007 67-15, .817 1st in Southwest, lost to GSW in 1st
2008 51-31, .622 4th in Southwest, lost to NOR in 1st

Avery comes in at #10, despite being un-employed at the moment. But I have this innate feeling he ends up in Chicago. Anyhow, all he’s done since he became a head coach is lead Dallas to four straight playoffs, including a finals appearance in 2006. However the two straight first round exits led to his firing. But this year at least, he just ran into a more loaded team. Whatever team lands him will be picking up a very good defensive-minded coach. He has the potential to move much further up this list.

9. Don Nelson, GSW
(DAL, 2003-05; GSW, 2006-Pres; 184-126, .594 reg. season; 5-10, .333 in playoffs)
2004 52-30, .634 3rd in Midwest lost to SAC in 1st
2005 42-22, .656 2nd in MidWest (resigned w/DAL)
2007 42-40, .512 3rd in Pacific beat DAL in 1st, lost to UTA in 2nd
2008 48-34, .585 3rd in Pacific

Don comes in a spot ahead of his protege. This is mainly because what he’s done with this Warriors team the past two years deserves mention. With a team that is very young and developing, he’s taken them on one playoff run, and a follow-up season that was the best ever by a team not making the playoffs. The Warriors have their work cut out with Monta Ellis, Baron Davis, and Andris Biedrins all free agents this season. And there has been some questioning of Nelson/Baron’s relationship. And assuming Nellie comes back this year, he has said it will be his final season. It will be an interesting season to watch in Oakland this year.

8. Byron Scott, NOR
(NJN, 2003-04; NOH, 2004-Pres; 173-197, .468 in reg. season; 7-5, .583 in playoffs)
2004 22-20, .524 1st in Atlantic (Fired)
2005 18-64, .220 5th in Southwest
2006 38-44, .463 4th in Southwest
2007 39-43, .476 4th in Southwest
2008 56-26, .683 1st in Southwest beat DAL in 1st, lost to SAS in 2nd

Byron Scott, one of the league’s most underrated coaches, comes in at number 8. All he has done is gone to back-to-back finals with Jersey, then completely rebuilt this Hornets team into a powerhouse. Yet no one ever talks about him when we mention the best coaches in the league. I think he’s right there with some of the best in the league. Anyone could coach Chris Paul, he’s a superstar on any team. But his development of David West and Tyson Chandler deserve some recognition.

7. Rick Adelman, HOU
(SAC, 2003-06; HOU, 2007-Pres; 204-127, .616 reg. season; 12-16, .429 in playoffs)
2004 55-27, .671 2nd in Pacific beat DAL in 1st, lost to MIN in 2nd
2005 50-32, .610 2nd in Pacific lost to SEA in 1st
2006 44-38, .537 4th in Pacific lost to SAS in 1st
2008 55-27, .671 3rd in Southwest lost to UtA in 1st (w/HOU)

In my opinion, Adelman is the best pure offensive mind in the game. He took a Kings team on a very nice run through his years there. And he’s going to take a couple years to get the Rockets really going. But once they do, Adelman should get them pretty far. He should formulate an offense to work to the strengths of his superstars. If anyone can get T-Mac out of the first round, it’s adelman.

6. Jerry Sloan
(UTA, 2003-Pres.; 214-196, .522; 15-14, .517)
2004 42-40, .512 7th in Mdwest
2005 26-56, .217 5th in Northwest
2006 41-41, .500 2nd in Northwest
2007 51-31, .617 2nd in Northwest beat HOU in 1st, GSW in 2nd, lost to SAS in WCF
2008 54-28, .659 1st in Northwest beat HOU in 1st, lost to LAL in 2nd

This was very difficult to choose between Sloan and the #5. But despite the fact i have Sloan as the coach of the year, he loses in a nail-biter. He gets both credit and blame for Okur and AK underperforming. Credit because the team still won 54 games, blame because they struggled mightily. But he gets credit for over-seeing Deron Williams’ run to becoming a superstar.

Who Will Be The Top 5?

Hovie’s Home

19 05 2008

Jay-Hova is taking a bigger role with the Nets. He is going to represent them at the NBA Lottery tomorrow, as the Nets have a 1.1% chance of winning the first pick. Bruce Ratner (the majority share-holder) probably looked at Hov, then looked at Beyonce, and decided Jay was the luckiest dude in the organization.

But there’s a bigger rumor coming out of the Jersey, soon-to-be-Brookyn Nets: Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby for Richard Jefferson, Marcus Williams, Keith Van Horn’s expiring contract, and Jersey’s #1 pick in this year’s draft. I assume that last part would be only if Hov doesn’t get into the top 3. This would give the Nets a starting lineup of: Devin Harris, Vince Carter, Melo, Nenad Kristic, and Marcus Camby. This is immediately a playoff team. Possibly a second round playoff team. Especially in the East. But the bigger target would be LeBron James. With Bron Bron being a free agent and two years, and given his close relationship with both Melo and Hov, the Nets would look like the main option should he decide to bounce from Cleveland.

Whatever the case, things are starting to look really interesting out East. Especially if Melo should end up in Jersey. The pressure would definitely be on Cleveland to make a move to keep up. And all this right after the sweat hadn’t dried from yesterday’s historic clash.

The Cavalry has arrived

14 05 2008

Some things never change: people in San Francisco hate George Bush, and the Detroit Pistons are in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Tayshaun, Chauncey, Sheed, and Rip have all been here before. Many times. But this year is different. Last year was the weakest I’ve seen the foursome play. Tay forgot how to play one-on-one D, Chauncey was worn down, and Rip couldn’t get separation on his curls. But this year they’re back. And they look better than ever. Tay just locked down Hedo Turkoglu, Rip has been picking up the scoring, Sheed is always a monster, and Chauncey’s getting some extra rest for his tender achilles. But the best has been Tay. He’s been the team’s best player in the playoffs. He’s back to the long-armed, lock-down D that had become his trademark, plus he’s scoring at will with his ability to shoot over defenders. And they’re all rested with the rise of their bench. That bench….that bench is….scary good.

You start with Antonio McDyess, who is really the fifth starter in name only. He’s been down many of the roads with the first four, having been here in either a sixth-man or starting power forward role since the 2005 Finals Team. But Jason Maxiell is a best in McDyess’ old role. The super-sub looks like a more athletic and defensive-oriented Carlos Boozer. Constantly blocking shots and dunking on people, he’s become a big menace in his own right. The man is a beast in the low post. Then you have Rodney Stuckey, the rookie point guard who filled in for Chauncey for the past two games. Last night he dropped 15 points, 6 dimes, 2 steals and did not turn the ball over once. In a role where he can back up either Chauncey or Rip, Stuckey has elevated his game tremendously as the season has progressed. Aaron Afflalo was the best player at UCLA for a couple years, so adjusting to his role as an eighth-or-ninth-man was expected to be difficult. But it wasn’t. He’s developed in the bulkier, low post backup for Tayshaun. While Tayshaun causes problems with his long arms and athleticism on defense, Afflalo does it with his size and quickness. His minutes have gone down in the playoffs, but he’s still playing almost 10 a game. Wily vets Theo Ratliff and Lindsey Hunter round out the bench. Both of these guys are defensive-specialists. Hunter fits as the other backup guard to pair with Stuckey, and Ratliff is the fourth big. Both are proven performers at this level, and both feel the need to show that they still can play. Both could start for many teams but are perfectly content in their roles on such a good team.

But this is the big guys’ show. People talk about Nash, CP3, and Deron Williams, but Chauncey had his best season as a pro this year. He very well might have been the second best PG in the league (behind Paul) during the season, and continuing his stellar play into the playoffs. Rip has gotten back to his dominant shooting, dropping 32 & 31 in Games 5 & 6 to close out Orlando with Chauncey hurt. Tayshaun is playing the best ball of his career in these playoffs. He completely shut down Andre Iguodala and Hedo Turkoglu so far. He is going to be tested in the next round even further against either Lebron James or Paul Pierce, but he is up for the challenge. He’s also dropping 16 points and 6 boards a game while shooting 56%(!) in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Rasheed Wallace is still Sheed. He’s always going to be. He’s always going to lockdown your best low-post player, yell, scream, holler, and take over offensively when needed. He’s going to shoot over you and post through you. He’s the most underrated Power Forward of all-time, and might be the best true power forward (Sorry, Tim Duncan is a center) in the league right now. A battle with KG in the Eastern Conference Finals would be epic. But while the media loves the Celtics’ big 3, i’ll pick the Pistons’ big 4….with that bench….any day of the week.

MTV’s Top 10 MC’s…..

13 05 2008

list should really be renamed “the 10 most relevant rappers to today’s hip hop crowd.” Anyway, by my count there are only 9 truly relevant rappers right now anyway. So it’s anyone’s guess who the 10th will be. Here’s my list:

The Newbies:
9. Plies
8. Rich Boy
We give Rich Boy the edge for now because he had a superior album and multiple hit singles. Plies had one really big song and a bunch of guest spots. Plies had a super hit with “Shawty,” and is on his way to another one with “Bust It Baby Part 2.” In between, he dropped an album that was dope but didn’t have a whole lot of replay value, beefed with Trick Daddy, and guest appeared on nearly every remix imagineable, with a particular stand-out verse on DJ Khaled’s “I’m So Hood.” Rich Boy dropped two smash hit radio singles (“Throw Some D’s” and “Good Things”), hit a couple remixes, and dropped the two most intelligent songs on his albums as singles/videos paid for out of his own pocket. “Lets Get This Paper” was one of the realest songs/videos that have come out lately, and “Ghetto Rich,” especially the Weezy & Nas-featured remix, was almost as dope.

Two Superstars:
7. Game
6. Young Jeezy

Game took a vacation from rap, which explains why he’s so low now. He pretty much took a year off between the “Wouldn’t Get Far” video and the release of “Big Dreams.” But despite his personal bullshit, his buzz is picking up again. People are talking about “Big Dreams” and “Pain” instead of his strange personal behavior again, but he’s got a ways to go before his album drops. Jeezy has blown up guest spots all spring (as referenced here). But this new single “Put On,” with Kanye West on the vocoder, sounds like it could be a monster. Both of these cats were multiplatinum the first time around, before dropping to platinum on their follow-ups. If either of them can get back to the multi-level, it would be good for the industry and likely push them into the top 5.

The Next Regime:
5. Lupe Fiasco
4. Rick Ross

These two get props for holding us down this year. They had the only notable hip hop releases in the past 6 months, and both may be likely looking at platinum plaques. Lupe has been spoken of in this blog in more detail (see here. But he’s had two big singles and a seminal album. Ross has dominated the early ‘08 with “The Boss” and “Luxury Tax” in particular standing out, and he gained some headlines by outselling Janet Jackson’s first week, causing some to question Def Jam’s procedure with his album. Unfortunately, these claims seemed ill conceived as Def Jam is also Janet’s label. I briefed a little more about both of these two here.

The Top Of The Game
The King:
3. T.I.

Tip didn’t let a weapons charge, some jail time, or a wack album stop him. He’s come back, hard as ever. Fiery as ever. He dropped a super-dope introspective cut (“No Matter What”), called out Shawty Lo (TI picking on a wack Southern rapper…..again??!!), and got right back to it with the remixes and guest spots. His time away and weak last album are what contributed to his time away from the very top spot, but he is a quite a fair amount ahead of the 4s and 5 spots. T.I. was actually the easiest to place on this list.

The Very Best
“I must be the hottest if it isn’t you”-Lil Wayne on Rick Ross’ “Luxury Tax.”
2. Lil Wayne
Weezy has been named the best rapper alive by anyone with a magazine. But quietly, he’s slipped a bit. He has made more lazy mixtape tracks than classic ones of late, and hops onto more and more wack R&B songs. “Lollipop” is a monster, but he doesn’t even rap on that. The rap, “street” single, “A Millie” hasn’t fared nearly as well. But his hustle and grind have him almost interchangible with the top spot.

“You can ask big homie, man the top sure lonely, I ain’t lyin”-Kanye West on Young Jeezy’s “Put On.”
1. Kanye West
The funny thing is, a couple years ago, it wouldn’ve been blasphemous to even have him on this list. Was he even really a rapper? Or a Puff-esque character who happens to rap? Well he’s worked at it and gotten better with every chance. He does have his flaws: he raps a lot of guest spots that sound out-dated. They sound a lot like his flows from his first album throwaways. But rap has also changed to suit his rhyme patterns and flows better as well. He beat Fiddy in a silly sales war. He has dominated the past year in a way that very few have ever been able to do. He smashed us with countless huge singles: “Can’t Tell Me Nothin,” “Stronger,” “Good Life,” “Flashing Lights,” “Champion,” & “Homecoming.” He has hit us with videos that, for good (“Stronger”) or bad (“Flashing Lights”), always left us talking. He actually out-shined Weezy on his own “Barry Bonds” track. He took a lot of Jeezy’s shine on that “Put On” track. His presence on a track always seems to steal the show nowadays. And his impact on the industry has been full-proof. The success of affiliated-rappers like Lupe and Common was just the beginning. A whole new genre of rap has been formed, calling themselves the “hipsters,” inspired by Kanye and his compadres Lupe and Pharrell. And he still has that CRS supergroup project that everyone is awating with those two. That plus everyone in the industry reached out to him when his mother passed. And he’s put together the first “must see” rap tour in years, with his stageshow being completely fresh and incredible. With all that going on, it’s no wonder he dominated hip hop in a way very few have ever done before.

Honorable Mentions: First you have to mention the legends; Jay-Z and Nas are probably the best to ever do this rapping thing, but are getting older and wearing their younger fan-bases quite thin. Andre “Three Stacks” 3000 has dropped plenty of showstopping versus but has yet to capitalize on it with an album, and the majority of his guest spots were over a year ago. Ludacris and Fabolous have both been very successful in the past, but have had trouble building buzzes of late. Bun B and Scarface are legends, and tear up guest spots, but have been oftentimes forgotten with their solo projects. Snoop and 50 probably have the biggest gripes with not making the list, but both are running off of fumes at this point in their careers. “Sexual Eruption” did allright, but “Life Of Da Party” tanked. And 50 only had one successful song off his last album, and his G-Unit group album has yet to catch any sort of buzz. Fat Joe is all over the place and consistently drops hit singles, but has yet to translate any of his name-recognition into actual sales.

Soulja Boy, Sean Kingston, and T-Pain are over 800K and on platinum watch, Common, Pretty Ricky, and Prince are almost 700k, while Lloyd, Fab, and Musiq are over 600k. Lupe and Jill Scott are right at 600k, while Bone’s a tad below. Gerald Levert, Young Buck, and Plies are all over 500k. Meanwhile Jaheim and Rich Boy are right below.

20 Best Coaches (Part 2)…

13 05 2008

15. Maurice Cheeks, PHI
(POR, 2003-05; PHI, 2005-Pres; 176-207, .460 reg. season; 2-4, .333 in playoffs)
2004 41-41, .500 3rd in Pacific(w/POR)
2005 22-30, .400 (fired)
2006 38-44, .463 2nd in Atlantic
2007 35-47, .427 3rd in Atlantic

Mo Cheeks began his coaching career as a really nice players’ coach. He developed a very good relationship with Rasheed Wallace during his tenure in Portland. He also saved a young girl who was singing the national anthem, and happened to forget the words. But after coming to Philly, he didn’t get along with C-Webb and, to a lesser extent, AI. So they were both traded. Cheeks by all accounts has a great relationship with Andre Miller and Andre Iguodala on the current team. It makes sense that he gets along with Miller, who is almost exactly the same player Cheeks was in his day, just always playing for bad teams. But Cheeks has done an incredible job in Philly, especially this year. Iguodala, Thaddyeus Young, and Louis Williams have all taken giant steps in their development under Cheeks. And the team has still managed to stay competitive, taking the mighty Pistons to six games. Cheeks has had some good years in the past, but this was his first great year as a coach.

14. Stan Van Gundy, ORL
(MIA, 2003-06; ORL, 2007-Pres)
2004 42-40, .512 2nd in Southeast beat ORL in 1st, lost to IND in 2nd
2005 59-23, .720 1st in Southeast beat NJN in 1st, WAS in 2nd, lost to DET in CF)
2006 11-10 (resigned w/Heat)
2008 52-30, .643 1st in Southeast beat TOR in 1st; down 2-0 to DET in 2nd

Stan had one helluva season with Orlando this year, but in my estimation, a lot of it was set up by Brian Hill last year. The difference is that SVG is worlds ahead of Hill in in-game situations. Plus the development of Hedo Turkoglu as a borderline star in this league took a ton of pressure off of Dwight Howard in the post. To be honest, they over-achieved this season. If they are going to repeat their success, Rashard Lewis is going to have to have a much better year. He’s going to start having to earn that paycheck. Because no matter how great of a coach you are, you can only get your coach to overachieve for so long.

13. Nate McMillan, POR
(SEA, 2003-05; POR, 2005-Pres)
2003-04 37-45, .451 5th in Pacific (w/SEA)
2005 52-30, .634 1st in Northwest Beat SAC in 1st, lost to SAS in 2nd (w/SEA)
2006 21-61, .256 5th in Northwest (w/POR)
2007 32-50, .390 3rd in Northwest
2008 41-41, .500 3rd in Northwest

Nate is one of the best at developing young talent that we have in the league. This could possibly be because nobody really bothered to develop him when he was sitting on the bench behind Gary Payton for his whole career. And despite the fact that he was only in the league for his defense as a player, the teams he coaches are always stronger on the offensive end. This season, after trading one big man and drafting another, only to see him not play a game, the team still managed to finish .500 and be everyone’s pick as a playoff team next year.

12. Pat Riley
(MIA, 2005-08 )
2006 41-20, .672 1st in Southeast beat CHI in 1st, NJN in 2nd, DET in ECF, DAL in F, CHAMPS
2007 44-38, .537 1st in Southeast lost to CHI in 1st
2008 15-67, .183 5th in Southeast

Despite having his worst year as a coach, Pat Riley is still a sold #12. You have to keep in mind that Wade never should have played this year, as he was obviously hurt all year. Also, after Wade, Shaq/Marion (who were traded for each other, and both past their primes), and Haslem, the team was basically starting the NBDL all-stars. There was not another single legit rotation player on the team. Dreams of Dorell Wright coming into his own crashed when his season ended prematurely as well. A pre-season trade for Ricky Davis and Mark Blount brought two back-of-the-bench guys to a squad that was forced to start both of them. Same goes for Marcus Banks who came over in the Shaq/Marion trade. So, all-in-all, there might not have been a coach in the league that could’ve made this team competitive. So for now, he gets the benefit of the doubt.

11. Jeff Van Gundy
(HOU, 2003-07)
2004 45-37, .540 5th in Midwest lost in 1st to LAL
2005 51-31, .610 3rd in Southwest lost in 1st to DAL
2006 34-48, .415 5th in Southwest
2007 52-30, .634 3rd in Southwest lost in 1st to UTA

Despite the fact that he couldn’t get out of the first round, he was a very good coach for Houston. He is, possibly, the best pure defensive mind in the game. He’s a great coach, but he’s an even better color commentator when paired up with Mark Jackson. I love him because whenever Jackson tries to make a point, he makes a point to argue with him. It’s great TV. Gotta love JVG.
